Protecting Your Employees from Workplace Health Hazards

Updated: Oct 4

This is Blue Turtles Ltd first company blog so we thought it would be useful to set out our stall and tell you what we do and how we can work with you to improve your business. At the end of this Blog, we have also included some information on the sort of things we will be blogging about in the future that should prove useful to many business owners, directors, and managers who have HSE responsibilities. But first, we should tell you about Blue Turtle Ltd.

We are based in the northeast of Scotland but we cover the whole of the UK working with businesses of all types and sizes to help them comply with current HSE legislation. As Occupational Hygienists, we specialise in dealing with the health-related hazards in the workplace such as exposure to toxic substances, fumes, and mists, vapors, and dust as well as physical hazards such as noise and vibration.

For an introduction into what Occupational Hygiene is you can watch this short video developed by the British Occupational Hygiene Society (BOHS) that will give you a brief overview.

But why should you be interested in working with Blue Turtle Ltd?

There are a number of reasons to work with us but let’s concentrate on those around HSE work-derived regulations first. One of our primary aims is to help you protect your workforce from work derived ill health which means we focus on legislative compliance. Maintaining or recognising shortfalls in becoming legally compliant has several benefits a business can expect in return for its efforts.

Reduced Absence & Sickness

Better Staff Retention

Increased Morale, Productivity & Profits

Positive Reputation

Reduced Insurance Premiums

Lower Operating Costs

The main benefit in choosing to work with Blue Turtle Ltd is that we take a very different approach to work with other businesses. We are not like other consultants who arrive at your workplace, carry out their work, present you with a report, and leave you to it.

We have a genuine interest in protecting workers' health and as a result, we take an interest in how your business works and look to add value by helping you achieve your goals through supporting your HSE needs. Not only will we provide practical solutions to issues highlighted but we will engage with you to help you implement changes, develop procedures and processes to ensure that the ongoing management of your health hazards is adequately controlled.

What Services do we provide?

Blue Turtle Ltd provides a number of Occupational Hygiene Services which allows your business to fully understand the risks associated with the health hazards present in your specific place of work.

We carry out Personal Exposure Monitoring of airborne hazardous contaminants such as dust, fume, gas aerosol, mists, and fibers to establish if employee exposure is within the workplace limits as set out in legislation. An example of this would be carrying out air sampling for wood dust when woodcutting activities are taking place or fume when welding takes place. In doing this it allows us to establish if existing controls are effective or if any changes to working practices have impacted the personal exposure levels.

One of the controls used to reduce personal exposure to airborne hazards is the use of Local Exhaust Ventilation (LEV). We can carry out the mandatory 14-month LEV examination and Testing ensuring your business to meet regulatory compliance.

Workplace Noise Monitoring is another service we provide where we carry out a noise assessment survey to establish accurate noise levels in the workplace as well as assessing the personal noise exposure of employees. In doing this we can assess compliance with current legislation, ‘The Control of Noise at Work Regulations 2005’ which sets out clear noise exposure limits to help reduce the hearing loss caused by work activities.

Vibration in the workplace is a common health hazard associated with the use of handheld power tools, mobile machinery, and vehicles. High levels of vibration can lead to long-lasting and debilitating health issues such as Hand Arm Vibration Syndrome where the nerves and blood vessels have been damaged resulting in pain (especially in cold conditions) a loss of sensation and a loss of function. Call us to carry out Vibration Monitoring to check that workers exposure does not exceed the legal limits set out in the ‘Control of Vibration at Work Regulations 2005’.

We also carry out Air Quality Monitoring of indoor spaces to assess several parameters to ensure that the air quality is optimized to prevent symptoms such as dry throats, sore heads, and sore eyes. Poor air quality Is often associated with Sick Building Syndrome.

As business owners, directors, and line managers you may not recognize all of the health hazards present within your place of work and as such may have difficulty in expressing your concerns to us or opting for a particular service. We are always here on email or at the end of the phone to help you determine what your issues may be and what steps to consider next. We also offer a full Health Risk Assessment of the workplace where we assess all the health hazards associated with the work activities carried out. The Health Risk Assessment process involves inspecting the workplace and observing all work activities carried out within it. Workers are generally grouped by job descriptions to establish similar health exposure profiles and interviews are carried out to gain a full understanding of the potential health hazards.

Trying to ensure a healthy and safe environment for employee’s return to work during the COVID-19 pandemic provides an extra layer of complexity for the management of any business and as a result compliance with other workplace hazards can be overlooked. If you require assistance in providing an audit trail that shows you have a COVID-compliant workplace that also has not overlooked other key legislative requirements then we can provide a comprehensive service to support your business at this difficult time.

All of our services are carried out on-site where we can observe workers' behaviors and work activities to allow us to gain a full understanding of the health risks associated with the tasks. We aim to provide practical solutions with costs in mind and are able to offer ongoing support and intervention in the ongoing development and management of HSE issues where you need it.

We are here to help and keen to work with you to provide a healthy working environment for your employees while you reap the rewards of a HSE compliant business.

So, if you are looking to engage in the services of Occupational Hygiene Consultants who look to go that extra mile and add value to your business then look no further.
